The Portuguese midfielder joked about a change of shirt while expressing his admiration for his teammate
Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes joked that he will now have to wait at least another year to remove the No.8 shirt from Juan Mata’s hands after the Spain midfielder signed a new deal to ‘one year to stay at Old Trafford.
The club have confirmed Mata will return on Friday, with the midfielder vowing to stay after seeing his contract with the club expire last month.
Fernandes, who wore No.8 at Sporting CP before claiming No.18 at Old Trafford, says he will now have to wait a year to pick up his old number from a player he calls “an inspiration”.
What was said?
“I guess I’ll have to wait for number 8 another year,” Fernandes tweeted. “Congratulations my brother !! Well deserved! An example and an inspiration on and off the pitch.”
Mata’s time at Old Trafford
The 33-year-old World Cup winner moved to Manchester United in 2014, from Chelsea after spending three seasons in London.
Mata won four trophies during his time with the club: a Europa League title, an FA Cup, a Carabao Cup and a Community Shield.
In total, Mata has played 273 games for the club, scoring 51 times in all competitions.
His role in recent years has been reduced, however, with the Spaniard only making 18 appearances last season.
