Jack Grealish is set to join Manchester City from Aston Villa on a five-year contract. Talks are in their final stages and, barring an unexpected hitch, the playmaker will move for £ 100million.
Villa have gone to great lengths to keep Grealish, offering an improved deal, but a record-breaking transfer paid by an English club is about to be finalized. The 25-year-old has spent his entire career with his childhood team.
City are also keen to sign Harry Kane, who has stayed away from Tottenham this week in hopes of forcing a move. Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is unwilling to sell and it would take an offer significantly in excess of the already rejected £ 100million for a deal to be struck.
Representatives for City, Villa and Grealish are involved in the final leg of negotiations a day Villa added to his attacking options by signing Bayer Leverkusen’s Leon Bailey for around £ 30million. Villa manager Dean Smith said Bailey, who has scored 39 goals in three and a half Bundesliga campaigns for Leverkusen, would bring “tremendous pace and creativity”.
Villa is also interested in Tammy Abraham and could make an offer for the striker, who is valued by Chelsea at £ 40million, with proceeds from the expected sale of Grealish, whose decision would crush City’s transfer record.
It would also eclipse as the biggest fee paid by an English club the £ 89million spent by Manchester United to bring Paul Pogba back from Juventus five years ago. United are also at the top of the list of fees paid by one English club to another, with their £ 80million purchase of Harry Maguire from Leicester in 2019.
Grealish, like Kane, wants to play in the Champions League this season and win the first trophies of his career. City have won eight trophies in the past four seasons, including the Premier League and the Carabao Cup this year.
Grealish is set to be the first summer addition to Pep Guardiola’s squad. In April it was announced that deals had been made for teenage strikers Darío Sarmiento and Kayky, but Sarmiento has been loaned out to Girona and Kayky remains with Fluminense for the time being.
