Chelsea’s Malang Sarr revealed when he found out he was starting the game against Brentford on Saturday night.
The Frenchman made his first Premier League appearance against the Bees having played only once for the Blues before, a Carabao Cup match against Aston Villa in September.
Ben Chilwell scored the only goal of the game, with goalkeeper Edouard Mendy making a series of fantastic saves in the later stages to help secure his side’s three points.
Sarr told the Chelsea official website when he found out he was making his league debut, saying: “Today (Saturday) when the coach gave the team the pre-lunch meeting. I was really happy, but also ready because I have done so much.”
He was joined in the last three for the Blues by Andreas Christensen and Trevoh Chalobah, who all had to work hard against the newly promoted squad.
However, the 22-year-old appeared to adapt very quickly and did well to extinguish danger when needed.
“I was grateful and happy to be there from the start to show what I can do.”
Sarr spent last season on loan at Porto after signing for Chelsea as a free agent.
His defensive efforts on Saturday saw his side claim their sixth league win so far this season, and the clean sheet allowed the Blues to concede just three goals in total.
They will then face Malmö in the Champions League group stage on Wednesday night.
