Manchester City have had a very successful season despite the disappointment of the FA Cup and the heartbreak of the UEFA Champions League. Although the Premier League champions were unable to clinch a hat-trick, the way the English champions have won the Premier League is commendable.
After a very slow and erratic start to the 2020/21 season, very few expected City to bounce back the way they did. The Cityzens improved their game in December / January and went unbeaten for a record 28 games, registering 21 wins in the process which was pretty much decisive for the title.
That said, a huge amount of credit has to go to the duo of John Stones and Ruben Dias who formed a wall at the back and were instrumental in the record-breaking race. Players like Ilkay Gundogan and Fernandinho have also had their best seasons in recent years and, in short, it’s a team effort that has won the Cityzens, the Premier League and the Carabao Cup.
The PFA has published its Team of the Season (Goal) and there are six Manchester City players in a squad that seems balanced in all aspects.
Here’s what the team looks like:
Ederson gets the green light in purpose and rightly so. The Brazilian has had a wonderful season, having kept 19 sheets clean in 36 appearances and rightly securing the Golden Glove for the second time in a row.
João Cancelo, despite being set to leave the Cityzens this summer, has had one of his best seasons of late. The Portugal international was given a bit more attacking freedom by Pep and the full-back responded by scoring twice and assisting three times.
In the center of the backline (no surprises about that) there is the rock solid duo of Pierre Pierre and Ruben Dias. Stones and Dias have complemented each other very well this season and Stones has managed to give his Manchester City career a lifeline this season. The inclusion of Ruben Dias should come as no surprise, given that he won the prestigious FWA award.
At left-back we have Manchester United Luke Shaw who, like Stones, has also managed to relaunch his career this season and has been one of the best full-backs this season, if not the best.
Kevin De Bruyne made the cut here. The Belgian has established himself as one of the best midfielders in the world over the past six years. The 29-year-old has scored six times in the Premier League and assisted 12 times this season.
Ilkay Gundogan was City’s unlikely hero during the delicate December and January period as the Germany international hit a purple patch and scored well 17 goals in all competitions. The 2020/21 season has been the best for Gundogan in terms of number of goals.
that of Manchester United Bruno Fernandes is also part of the squad and there shouldn’t be any real surprises in his selection. The 26-year-old has some serious numbers to back up his case. With 18 goals and 12 Premier League assists in 37 appearances, the Portugal international has established himself as the man of choice at Old Trafford.
Mohamed salah carried the Liverpool attack midway through the season when the reigning Premier League champions appeared to have strayed and weren’t even able to qualify for the UEFA Champions League. Salah finished a very productive season with 22 goals and 5 assists as Jurgen Klopp and his men finished the season in third place.
Harry kane is the undisputed striker of this formation. The Englishman is currently in the form of his life and it is a real shame that Kane, despite his heroic efforts to score 23 goals and 14 assists this season, has not been able to lift Spurs to European rank. The Lillywhites finished just outside the Europa League spots and will play the first-ever UEFA Conference Cup.
Heung-min son has been the perfect match for Harry Kane in so many ways. The South Korean ended the season with an impressive total of 17 goals and 10 assists.
The duo of Kane et Fils recorded 40 goals and 24 assists between them.
