Son Heung-min is set to sign a new long-term contract at Tottenham Hotspur.
Son is one of Spurs’ most important players and he has had a successful 2020/21 season. In what has been his most prolific campaign to date, he has managed 17 goals and 10 assists in 37 games, continuing his successful partnership with Harry Kane and earning a spot on the PFA Team of the Year.
Despite the pair’s impressive form, Tottenham again missed out on Champions League football. Thanks to their seventh place, they will instead participate in the first Europa League Conference.
With Spurs stammering as a club across the board, Son has been linked with a move away from north London. However, according to Fabrice Romano, the South Korean is about to sign new terms. Negotiations began in December and a new long-term contract is expected to be confirmed soon, with all parties confident that a deal can be reached.
The news is a big boost for Tottenham fans who have been through a difficult few months. In April, Jose Mourinho was dismissed as head coach, days before losing the Carabao Cup final with interim boss Ryan Mason at the helm.
Mason returned the reins at the end of last season and despite his ties to Antonio Conte, Mauricio Pochettino and a host of other big names, they now seem poised to name incumbent Roma boss Paulo Fonseca as their next head coach. .
This is not the only question mark hanging over the club. Kane’s future remains uncertain. The forward has told Spurs he wants to leave the club with Manchester City and Chelsea both interested.
Kane – who finished last season at the top of the Premier League goals and assists table – still has three years on his contract, and Spurs certainly don’t have to sell this summer.
