Tottenham may have just hired one of Jose Mourinho’s fiercest rivals to succeed him.

Spurs are reportedly in talks with former Inter Milan and Chelsea boss Antonio Conte to take over the role of head coach from Mourinho, who was sacked in April ahead of the Carabao Cup final.

And there’s no doubt Mourinho wouldn’t give his approval if he were to be given a choice after having had a lot to say about Conte in the past.

More recently, the seasoned Portuguese boss criticized Conte for his handling of Christian Eriksen’s situation before the Danish midfielder changed Spurs for Inter.

“I think Antonio, I think Antonio,” he said. “I think it was publicly. It is very positive that Eriksen is coming to Inter.

“We shouldn’t be talking about players from other clubs until they become our players. You ask me about Gedson [Fernandes, Spurs’ new signing from Benfica] From the moment Gedson’s name was on the screen and I ain’t told you nothin ‘ [until he signed].

“You protect everyone. Is it about respect? I don’t want to give you a title. It’s up to you.

“If Inter are confident, they are confident because they are ready to make an offer to us, which has yet to be done.

“So when I see people talking, especially people with responsibilities, I’m a little surprised.”

However, that wasn’t the only fallout between the pair with Conte once they went to town on Mourinho amid criticism during his time at Chelsea.

He said of Mourinho in 2018: “You show you’re a little man,” Conte said after a weakened Chelsea side were held 0-0 by Norwich City in the FA Cup third round on Saturday .

“He was a little man in the past, he’s a little man in the present and he will be in the future.

“It’s not my problem, I consider him a very small man with a very low profile. I remember for example with Ranieri.

“He offended Ranieri for his English, then when Ranieri was fired he put on a shirt with his name on it. It shows you are a fake.”

If Conte takes over from Spurs, the pair will have three clubs in common across Chelsea, Inter and Tottenham, but it seems that is where the commonalities end.
